Garden dance
by Angela Brown, Hawkes Bay Today, Friday 15 September 2000
One of the Blossoms Festival’s more unusual events is Ann Dewey’s Nine Daisies, a dance designed for performance in gardens.
Nine Daisies is Dewey’s fourth full-length dance creation and it came about because she wanted to dance outdoors. As she loved gardens, that seemed like the perfect setting.
The dance explores creation and the unfolding of life in nature. There all concepts well-known to gardeners, Dewey says. She maintains it’s a dance for anyone, not just “dance” appreciators.
She says you don’t have to worry what its about because everyone gets what they want from Nine Daisies and responds differently.
The musical landscape of Nine Daisies is the original music of John Gibson. There’s some piano, some tuba, even some reggae. Dewey also promises some surprises with the costumes.
